The Didsbury Museum, situated in the Town of Didsbury, Alberta, has been established to tell the story of the founding, settlement and development of the community in and surrounding the Town of Didsbury from the late 1800s to the present.

Exhibits at the Didsbury Museum

We are very proud of our Museum. This page will show what you can expect to find in each room as you discover the past, and founders, of our wonderful community and surrounding area.

Do you have a personal treasure, a family heirloom or a collection of objects, documents or photographs that you think should be part of the Didsbury Historical Society's collection?

Our Collections Management Committee meets once a month to consider all potential gifts offered to the museum to see if they meet the criteria for new acquisitions. If you have something you want considered to become part of the Didsbury Museum's Collection(s), please inquire by E-Mail to office@didsburymuseum.ca or phone 403-335-9295.

Our gathering place. We host coffee and conversations here. This room is available for private and public user groups to meet. Articles are from Merchant shops of the 1930s, 1940s, and into the 1960s.
MERCANTILE ROOM		 You will find displays and items directly related to Didsbury community member's contributions to both World Wars and other conflicts. Uniforms displayed are official and were worn by local residents.
MILITARY & COMMUNITY SERVICES		 Items of clothing that would be found in a turn of the century home. There is an organ from the 1900s, a baby crib, and a bed, complete with bed warmer, which coals from the fire would be put in to make the bed nice and cozy on those cold Alberta nights.
HOMESTEAD ROOM
You might remember sitting in desks similar when you went to school. This is one of our favourite rooms to host the elementary students when they come on their visits.
SCHOOLROOM		 Here you will find items used for turn of the century and later farming and livestock care. See our Egg Grading Station, a wild oat separator, and tools like lumber saws and scythes.
AGRICULTURE		 Many sports and Didsbury athletes have put Didsbury on the provincial and international map. We have an Olympic tie as swimmer, Jillian Tyler, calls Didsbury home.
SPORTS
Here are items used before the smart phone in your pockets were even a glimmer of an idea. Didsbury had its own AGT building, where an operator would connect you to the business or residence you wanted to speak to, provided you knew the 3 or 4 digit number!
COMMUNICATIONS		 Our chapel features items from church groups that have served our area, including Anglican, Lutheran, Zion Evangelical, and United. This chapel can be rented out for small weddings, perfect for those who like a more intimate setting.
WORSHIP		 Equipment and records of the medical history of the Didsbury and Mountain View County area. Includes children's cough syrup, special ointments, and mercury-based antiseptic tablets!
MEDICAL CLINIC
Set up and maintained by the Mountain View Model Railroad Club, the miniature trains showcase their importance to western expansion in Canada, bringing settlers and immigrants west to seek their new lives and fortunes in the New World.
RAILROAD		 Take a moment to check out the handmade quilts hanging in the Homestead Room and the Schoolroom.
QUILTS		 Our hallways have mini displays depicting our First Nations traditional territories, artwork by local artists, author and Registered Nurse, and a pictoral homage to our town's namesake in Didsbury, Manchester, England.

Plan to spend extra time in our Military Room as you read stories from our veterans and enjoy the War Brides exhibit.
A beautiful love story appears in our Military Room - a story of a World War II "War Bride". The story centres around an English girl working in a factory building airplanes in Leeds. It's the story of an Alberta farm boy who signed up to serve and was sent to Leeds, England. Lewis & Margaret Brinson

Movies filmed in Didsbury include Robin Wright's Land, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane in Let Him Go, Gene Hackman and Lee Marvin's Prime Cut, plus TV Shows Wynonna Earp, Fargo will Billy Bob Thornton, Under the Banner of Heaven with Andrew Garfield, and Guilty Party with Kate Beckinsale.
Didsbury is Open for Show Business! Enjoy our exhibit on the west wall of our stairwell of the movies and television productions that have been filmed right here in Didsbury!

The beginning of Didsbury's Veterans Banner project coincided with the 75th Anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.
The Didsbury area has experienced four tornadoes on July 1st - the earliest recorded was in 1909. The display at the Museum includes photos and eye-witness accounts.

The Didsbury Museum is a non-profit making, permanent institution, in the service of society and its development, and open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates, and exhibits, for the purpose of study, education, and enjoyment, material evidence of people and their environment.     To qualify as a Provincial Historic Resource, historic places like the Didsbury Museum must normally be associated with a significant aspect of Alberta's past and retain the physical site features necessary to convey this significance.
